When the new pastoral assistant was appointed in September 2007, the young people approached him after the service when he was introduced. “Do you play an instrument?” they asked. “Yes” he answered, “keyboard.” They then told him about their vision that had begun taking shape earlier that year. Within two weeks a music group had been formed, which has continued to meet on Tuesday evenings. Members, covering all ages, come from several denominations. We call ourselves “The Band”.

The vision was and still is to provide a different type of worship and praise to the normal Sunday style by adapting a café style approach and hold it at 8pm on Sunday once a quarter, hence the name After 8.

The informal multi-media café approach continues to prove popular. We have drawn up to 70 people, this being the most we could accommodate when the group started, before the building scheme. Services last about an hour, and can include drama, interactive prayers, video clips and a specific message based on the theme. Music is a blend of traditional and modern. Our last couple of themes were “You Only Live Twice”, based upon the James Bond film, and “Freedom” as the service was on Independence Day, 4 July.

Fun, enjoyment and prayer are at the heart of what we do using the varied skills of music, drama, IT, worship leading, speaking and providing refreshments. Through this eclectic mix of gifts we seek to convey God’s message in a different but challenging way.

We are an ecumenical group who meet on Tuesday nights at the Church from 7.30-9.30pm. If you would like to join us or want further information contact info@after8.org.uk.
